Since villas on Koh Samui started to become a popular alternative to staying in resorts and guest houses, the island has witnessed a boom in the construction of private residences that cater to a large variety of guests, from couples on honeymoon to large family gatherings or company functions.
As more and more people start to appreciate the benefits of having an entire villa to themselves, the investment incentive also increases and for some villas in popular areas it is not uncommon to see returns on investment in the 6-10% range.
Private villas vary greatly in terms of amenities and design. Some villas are built in traditional Thai style using building and construction methods that rely on ancient techniques that take into account the local weather conditions and uses materials that are easily sourced locally. Many people appreciate this type of building style to more modern designs, arguing that they blend in with the environment and stays true to local building tradition. Others, however, prefer a more contemporary design with clean lines and minimalistic decor, arguing that they rely less on the use of certain wood types that are scarce and sometimes unsustainably sourced.
In terms of amenities, villas also differ greatly. Some are relatively modest with just a couple of bedrooms and limited facilities, while others are expansive mansions with all the facilities and amenities one would expect from a five star resort or hotel. A private pool is standard in most villas, but some even have more than one pool, as well as additional indulgences such as a private spa with steam and Jacuzzi, a gym with state of the art equipment, a cinema room, tennis court, games room with everything form table tennis to a Playstation and library.
If the onsite facilities at the villa is not enough to keep guests entertained, Koh Samui also offers plenty of attractions and entertainment options of its own. The island is perfect for water sports of all types, with most of the main beaches offering jet ski rentals, kayaks, snorkelling equipment or dive courses.
